National recognition for Blacon sustainability project

Efforts to make a popular Chester attraction more environmentally-friendly have been recognised at the National Energy Efficiency Awards.

A wide range of sustainability improvements have been installed at Blacon Adventure Playground, which is owned and managed by Avenue Services.

Upgrades include new solar panels, energy-efficient lighting and an air-source heat pump, while hands-on learning materials are encouraging visitors to find out more about sustainability and the steps everyone can take to make a difference.

The improvements were funded by national housing provider Sanctuary as part of its commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions, and were designed by sustainability consultancy Anthesis and installed by Hewer FM.

The upgrades have already reduced CO2 emissions at Blacon Adventure Playground by more than five tonnes a year, while Avenue Services is now working with Cheshire West and Chester Council to deliver further improvements, with the long-term goal of becoming net zero.

The successful project was recognised at this year’s National Energy Efficiency Awards, where it was awarded third place in the Multi-measure Project of the Year category.

The National Energy Efficiency Awards recognise quality and best practice within the UK energy saving and efficiency sector, with this year’s winners announced during a ceremony at the Hilton Metropole hotel in Birmingham.
