Blacon food club celebrates first anniversary

6 February 2025

An award-winning food club that cuts waste and helps families in Blacon save money on their weekly shop is celebrating its first anniversary.

The Bread and Butter Thing is a charity that redistributes fresh, good-quality surplus food that would otherwise go to waste.

Its Blacon hub launched in February 2024 and operates at Blacon Adventure Playground’s Activity Centre, off Shelley Road, at 1pm every Tuesday.

The service is supported by Blacon-based social enterprise Avenue Services and delivered by staff and local volunteers.

Each week, you can collect three bags full of food, worth around £35, for just £8.50.

The bags contain a variety of good-quality food, from fresh fruit and veg to chilled items for the fridge and cupboard staples such as pasta and cereal.

Other options are available to fit different needs – with an individual bag costing £5 and a large family option available for £17.

As many as 70 households now make use of the service each week, with numbers steadily growing as word has spread. Since launch, more than 8,000 bags of food have been packed and distributed, with volunteers contributing more than 1,000 hours of time to support the cause.

More visitors are welcome, and the club is open to all and free to join, with no long-term commitment.

Chris Leicester, Partnerships Manager at Avenue Services, which manages Blacon Adventure Playground, said: “We’re proud to work with the Bread and Butter Thing to offer this valuable service to our local community.

“I’d encourage anyone interested to give it a try, and I’d like to thank all the volunteers from the club who work alongside our teams to pack and distribute the food each week.”
