Thousands of children took part in a successful summer activity programme organised by Avenue Services and its community partners in Blacon. A schedule full of activities during the school holidays saw almost 2,700 youngsters take part in a total of 95 events and activities across the Blacon area. These included events at Blacon Adventure Playground, fitness sessions at KGV Sports Hub, nature activities at Countess of Chester Country Park, reading challenges with Blacon Library and many more! The summer programme was supported by funding from the Department for Education’s Holiday Activities and Food programme, distributed through community interest company Edsential. The additional funding meant the adventure playground could provide almost 4,000 free packed lunches for children over the school holidays. Sandra Hewitt, Blacon Adventure Playground Manager, said: “The summer programme has been a great success this year and I want to say a huge thank you everyone involved in its organisation. “The support from the Blacon community has been amazing and it’s great to see the number of children that took part in the programme this year.” Cheshire West and Chester Council, Blacon Beacon, Blacon Children’s Centre, Cheshire Police, Welcome Network, Blacon Butterflies WI and Holy Trinity Church were also involved in organising and delivering activities. Further support was provided by local councillors and volunteers, West Cheshire Foodbank, Rage Fitness, the Cleaner, Safer, Greener group, Craft Corner, Aldi, Asda, Heron Foods, Spar and Morrisons.
